Pierre Hébert it would be very nice to be able to specify the position of the bottom of a window and let it grow upwards.

    Awesome !

it reminds me my first PC and the reason why I switched to Slackware.

Do you realize that Win95 is 18 years old ???

Glad to say I never posessed a Windows PC. I was using an Acorn A3000 back in the early 90’s. My first real PC was a 386 that someone was throwing away, and Linux went straight on that 🙂

I’ve been playing a bit more with the folder placement stuff (on my “proper” desktop), and have a further suggestion. It would be nice to be able to make the folder window appear at a position relative to the folder itself. For example, in the pic above, if I could say “make the bottom of the start menu appear just above the top of the start button” then I’d not have to experiment with entering pixel positions to get it right.

    Sorry for spamming…

I think using pixel positions relative to the screen edge for custom folder placement does need rethinking a little. I tried setting the top position for some folders to make them open immediately above the folder icons. Then I rotated the screen and, unsurprisingly, the folders were shifted off the bottom.

I imagine that most cases where people might wish to specify a custom position (rather than flush against one of the sides)  will be cases where that position is relative to the folder icon itself, so allowing the folder window to be docked above/below/left/right of its icon might be a useful option.

Quite frankly that is pretty twisted.

Alun Jones so I guess that what you want is a popup menu not a folder 😉 That’s an interesting deviation from the original concept but I think it would need more than a anchor because rotating would likely need to change the anchor direction (not enough space above would need to place the window below for instance). Is my understanding correct ?

Popup menus? Why didn’t I think of calling them that?!

I’m not sure you need to have cleverness with the anchor direction on rotation though. If someone creates a folder/menu whose layout is too big for the space they’re trying to put it in, that’s really their problem.

With the dual placement facility for the folder icons, it’s even a problem that they can fix for themselves anyway.
