How long should I typically expect the restore function to take in LL with a fairly modern device, an LG G3 in this case?

I’ve been making frequent use of the backup option within LL’s Backup/Restore menu from the main settings page to retain my customizations. I also have a tasker profile that monitors the Lightening Launcher folder for any changes and creates a copy of the entire folder to my external SD.

After having lots of data realted issues with the custom ROM I was using I decided to switch to a custom ‘stock’ ROM.  After the install and restoring my apps etc I then proceeded to copy back the Lightening Launcher folder from my external SD and went into Settings>Backup/Restore and tapped on the latest archive in the list to restore my setup, however, after almost 20 minutes of the ‘Restore in progress’ dialog with the spinning circle I decided something wasn’t working right and tried an earlier archive with the same result.

TL:DR restoring my LL backup archives doesn’t appear to be working and just sits on ‘Restore in progress’ for 20 odd minutes before I end up cancelling it.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  1. On a rooted device you could try to make a manual restore (Copy the content of the archive to the correct location in Lightnings data folder). Afterwards kill LL.

This is however no solution and should be used only if there is no other way and you really need your setup back.

Is it just a zip / tar archive?

Thanks for the help and quick response, I’ll take a look.

I would also recommend to send the file to Pierre, if he isn’t able to restore the backup too will probably find a fix.

  5. For future use i recommend “export template”. if u do not.

Saves all. It’s better then the Backup function.

Creates files in folder internalsdcard/LightningLauncher. this should stay after reinstall and much easier to copy to/from external sdcard.

Thanks again for all the helpful advice.

I’ve managed to successfully restore my slightly older backup from 10/21 instead of 10/28, which had previously also refused to restore.  Here’s the steps I went through in case it helps anyone else:

Both my 10/21 and 10/28 backups were giving me the ‘Restore in progress’ dialog for 20+ minutes before I cancelled them.  After digging around in my backed up copy of the Lightening Launcher folder I noticed that the 10/28 backup was only a few hundred K in size, compared to 7+MB for the 10/21 and earlier backups.  Despite this, the 10/21 still refused to install.

I deleted the 10/28 backup as it was obviously corrupt in some way and also deleted everything under /data/data/net.pierrox.lightening_launcher_extreme/files/ and then found that I could restore my 10/21 backup successfully via the settings menu.

My best guess would be that trying to restore the corrupt 10/28 backup caused issues of its own which prevented a successful restore of the 10/21…

Anyhow, it appears to be working now. Thanks again for all the hints and guidance.

  7. But export template doesnt save how app drawer is configured, it doesnt save folders. When I restore from template it doesn’t restore how I organised app drawer with folders theres no folders

  8. Ewa K ok, i didnt know this because i do not  use this specialties in appdrawer 😉

A backup should be better because it saves all data, even not used items.

A template is better if you plan to restore it on a different device or if you want to ‘clean’ the launcher data (but as Ewa said some things are not saved). Note: I have a highly experimental script to do a cleanup of lighting data removing unused files. If your setup has only few items, but your backups are big, if you can accept the risk ask me.
