I think it would be theoretically possible, but there are some things which I don’t know how to solve, e.g. a folder has an opener, a panel doesn’t or where should a new folder be opened, and in which size?

A folder an a panel, as containers are exactly the same.
The difference is how both are displayed. (And yes, they both have an opener: the folder as item, and the panel as item respectively)
Change a folder into a panel or viceversa will be as easy as
Remove the folder item, but not the container
Place a panel item in that place without creating a container
Set the id of the panel item’s container to the previously folder container
But I’m sure this is not as easy as it seems.
