I think “Sort a->z /z->a” should not compact the items like they do right now. Sort should sort, compact should compact.
I had a beautifully layed out panel which was completely messed up with a sort attempt :-/

I think I agree, since there are both options available, they probably should act discreetly.

I am not sure there is a really better way to handle this. Probably the best I can do is to display a popup warning the user about the consequence.
Oh, and yes, undo would be great. More and more that becomes something I have to think about although this is a huge task considering all the places where modifications can take place.
