I would prefer to rework icons if they are not clear enough without text, I think it takes less space this way

I was just wishing for this myself. For some reason, I find those icons ambiguous, and I don’t have a suggestion to make them clearer. Not a major thing, but it would be nice to have.

However I find them perfectly defined.

When I first saw them I understood what they did.

Maybe a solution is to show a toast with the description when long click them.

TrianguloY I agree that the icons’ overall function is perfectly clear, but for some reason I have a heck of a time intuiting which outcome each one creates. It’s probably just me — I also lack a sense of direction in the real world — but somehow, the up/down visual of the icons doesn’t quite convey forward/back to me. I don’t have a solution (except for me to learn better), but I offer my experience in case it might help with design.

Anne-Elizabeth Hawley I totally understand, don’t worry. The link image-meaning is a subjective one, and also (maybe not in this case) personal background like culture, memory, but mainly experience can influence.

(It’s true that it wasn’t the first time I had seen similar icons for the ‘change the z order’ actions)

TrianguloY This is a poor example, but begins to get at the visual distinction between forward-back and up-down:
