How do I make the background of the sidebar transparent?

Long press on it.
Menu comes up that says Folder at the top.
Then press Settings , Folder and go to Current Folder Window.
Scroll down to the box.
Long press in the center until all of it is highlighted, and select a color, or really just drag the alpha slider all the way to the right.
