Thanks, Chris Chastain . i need one step more, actually. i want to launch Google Now by hitting a button or a gesture on the desktop. I know there’s an option to keep Google Now on all the time, but i’d rather enable it when needed so it doesn’t eat up battery. Any thoughts?
I guess I don’t understand exactly what you need. Any gesture can be set to launch anything, under events, but the steps above would fall under your description of “a button on the desktop”.
if i go into Google Now, i hit the ‘microphone’ button and it will start listening to my commands. i want a button or a gesture on my desktop that does the same thing. Does that make more sense?
Yes, it does. That’s not the same thing, and I’m not sure it can be done without one of those apps the exposes all the hidden shortcuts, but I’ll try to investigate.
it’s a bummer that it’s not native, but this solution works nicely. I’m a big Tasker fan and i can trigger automated tasks with voice commands through Google Now. With this in place, i just set up a button to start Google Now and i can tell it any command i set up. Thanks again!
I use stop points with open app set as the reached event to the left of my homescreen to mimic the Google Now launching available in the Google launcher.
Long press -> add (black plus icon at top) -> app -> select Google from app drawer (heads up for the new icon!)

Install ics voice search from the playstore. Then just add it to the desktop, or some gesture.
Works well, and it’s only 44kb
works like a champ! Thanks, Chris Chastain

In the info for that app, it said the shortcut you wanted has been removed as of android 4

Kishor Rao try Henry Dale’s idea. I didn’t think of it, but if it fits in your particular setup it may be worth a try
Stop point method will also function with floating desktop
Henry Dale I’m not familiar with the stop points. Can you share screen shots? It may help.
Stop points basically tells a container where and in what direction to stop scrolling.
