I wondered what you could create just using LLX, some GAPPs which most set ups would have and not being to technical (scripting etc…)

Here’s my attempt

This is good as it looks a lot like the stock launcher.

If you see what Pierre posted that idea has gone more towards my idea of a skin for the launcher instead of a default theme to then skin. You should read it if you haven’t yet, it has me pretty excited for the possibility of what it could do. Pierre posted something that would basically export all the settings of the desktop but none of the objects. Thus allowing the user to keep their setup and change the overall look of everything without actually interfering with anything.

I do agree that the launcher needs a new default look though when a user installs it.

Maybe Pierre can post what he would expect from a default theme as far as what can and can not be included in there. Such as widgets, panels, events, etc. That way this community that is almost 2,000 members strong can work together to make something great.

Yeah have seen Pierre’s post and agree skins is definitely the way to go.

My set up was so full of widgets, scripts and tasker I wanted try going back to basic just using LLX anyway and I have to say it certainly has improved performance.

Doubt it will stay this way for long as I can’t stop tinkering.

In the past there has been a contest whose purpose was to define a new default setup. There have been great stuff, but in the end the default setup has receive no update. This is a pretty sensitive thing, like the app icon by the way. As it takes time to define and is “optional” (or not, depending on the point of view…), I always push back this work for later, and tend to favor new feature and bug fix instead.

The default setup is subject to a lot of constraints: no widget, apps that can be found on all devices (phone or sms apps are problematic because they vary according to manufacturer), no wallpaper (or something that can be shipped in the package without adding 1Mb…), as few icons as possible (package size, again), should adapt to portrait and landscape, and also low res devices (quite a few QVGA screens are still in use).

That’s pretty much what I thought you had in mind for a default setup.

What is your stance on slightly more advanced features like panels, scripts, etc.?

Also would there be a way to find the default system app for things such as making calls, opening webpages, opening pictures, etc.? Then apply that to a LLX shortcut or action. It seems like that might require a bit of work but it’s just my mind being a bit curious.

Scripts and panels are ok. Even if panels are currently in the “expert mode” category, I plan to change this, because this is a common way to make a dock bar.

That’s perfectly possible to try several candidates for a given app. This is what is done for the browser because I was able to discover all alternatives browsers myself (the old android browser, or chrome). For other apps I will make a poll when I start to work on this. Hopefully community members will allow to build a comprehensive database of alternatives.

Technically, shortcuts uses “Intents” that can  use a generic “verb” (an action and some data such as view something, open this webpage, send this document, etc.) or directly link to a specific component by its name. Over the time I found that it was safer to directly use the exact component name in order to avoid surprising things.

What about a menu that appears on first launch of the app that gives you the choice of downloading a few starter templates (sorry, I don’t know how much this would impact the package size but I thought maybe downloading from the internet could save this precious space)
