What about disable/enable the advanced features (we will need to discuss which ones) with a simple checkbox in all settings?
They will be only hidden, so they will still work in case someone load a template with them.
New users will only see the ‘basic’ features and that checkbox. Check it or not will be their decision, and maybe this will help to understand that LL is more than a launcher.

Hide options? Why?
I think that a better groping or better UI for features and options is necessary, not hiding them.

Bogdan Tautu the answer is simple:
The more options you have at once that you never seen before, the more you feel cornered and upset. It’s easy to go step by step, but users don’t know what step take, that’s why I suggested to hide the advanced options. So users will play and understand basic features before go to the advanced ones.
Better grouping? That could be another solution, yes.
I’m just trying to understand what new users feel.
If you are a new user and you are reading this, your comment will be welcomed. Just say why you think LL makes you feel…stressed, or similar (sorry, can’t find good synonyms).

I’m not too sure I agree with the theory of hiding stuff, and really can’t think of what would be logical to hide.
If may suggest:
It is apparently newly possible for moderators to “pin” a post to the top, like a “sticky” in a traditional forum.
How about you, TrianguloY, or even the group, make a FAQ with stuff like panel borders, stop points, bookmarks, etc and pin it in the tutorial section.
Or maybe in a new “New User” section?

I understand what TrianguloY is saying as I understood this Launcher when I bought my new phone in December but didn’t want to go through setting it up on my new phone at that time because I just wanted to play with my new phone.. Now I’m back and will never go back!

Chris sledge That is true.
I don’t really have a problem with hiding features, and I have seen it done that way before. Something like an advanced and simple toggle?

I think we should do exactly what Chris sledge said with tutorials here, and I think that the default ll template should include a link to this community, right from the home page from the very start

The pin feature seems to not be implemented yet. But it’s a good idea Chris Chastain

TrianguloY, meh that figures. It said something about it on the most recent G+ app update.

So, pin post work now. Moderators can pin the post they want, even from others.
Say here what post do you think are better to pin, and I (or other moderator) will pin it. If some agree of course.

TrianguloY IMO, pinned posts should be used sparingly. I think a new post should be drafted with that in mind.
Maybe something as simple as quick help for the top 3-4 most asked new user issues, with a link to the wiki and a mention of the long press help within the Launcher menu, would be a good start?

Maybe hiding stuff would be a first step. At least it would avoid questions such as “should I use X or Y or even Z to do this ?”. For instance some scrolling related options are frightening. Some objects are difficult to understand and only create confusion (stop points, panels). Generally speaking, shortening menus would give the feeling of a simpler app, even if other options are here but just hidden.
Regarding pin posts, I think this is great for the community but not as a documentation tool. This community requires approval and as such cannot be accessed by non registered users (and it cannot be changed). I think the wiki is a better too for this, with an easier navigation.

I suggested the hide options, because there are a lot of apps that works like this. They have a ‘simple mode’ and a ‘advanced mode’ and you can toggle them with a checkbox in settings.
Also, almost all of them asks you when you install it to choose which mode do you want to use (“normal or advanced?”).
I personally think this is a great solution, basic users will choose normal, they will like the app without too much options (like a lot of versions before)
Advanced users (or normal users that want to try) will choose advanced, and they will discover how powerful the app is…and the best is that in general they won’t say ‘this is very difficult’…because they chosen it!
But of course, only my opinion.

Chris sledge I totally agree with this.
Maybe… linked with the F1 key 😉

Pierre Hébert lol
Maybe you can also think in how kitkat shows the help: under a help link in the three dots menu on the bar.
