I have a 5.30″ – 800×1280 screen, I bump dpi down to 220 and usually run a grid size of about 8×12 or 10×14. You just have to play with the settings and come up with what you like.

I just go with 19×10 grid, or basically 100 pixel squares.. Means icons with reflections need to be edited to 3 rows tall etc, however the extra rows gives you better granularity in your icon placements (outside of free mode).
