OK so here is an update to my last question about making my own app drawer on a different desktop….

So much faster and looks great!

I added a panel and made its grid size different from the desktop and then added the “all apps” shortcut into the panel . Then go into the all apps shortcut. Then click on apps and say “add to desktop” and it gets added to the panel! Do it to all apps you want in it. Then go to panel settings and tell it to sort however you want and turn on “rearrange items”. I chose a to z.

Also this is a vertical scroll only.

This works great because when I download a new app I just go through the all app shortcut in the panel and highlight the app and say add to desktop and the sorting will put in there alphabetically!

This loads lighting fast! Unlike the actual LLx app drawer…

Thanks Carolyn Boyle for the help setting this up and for your ideas.

But don’t you lose all the functionality of the app drawer like app info, uninstall, etc.?

I still can do all that by long holding the app and select app then app info or uninstall.

Tyler Buckner could you test something?

When you force close the launcher from android settings, the time it cost for load is the same as the time the app drawer takes?

TrianguloY Should be way faster since not the system app list needs to be evaluated and icons extracted.

The app drawer do that every time?

Pierre Hébert, is this correct? Perhaps that’s why it is so laggy

I force stopped LLx and hit home it took a split second to go home then I tap my apps tab and it loads and I can scroll all my apps instantly! I have even restarted the phone and went straight to that same app tab and boom, way fast!

Lutz Linke TrianguloY, the list of apps and icons are extracted once at the very first run. It is then updated from time to time when the launcher receives a notification from the system that an app has been added, removed or updated. This explains a LL particular flaw: if the notification is not received (for instance firmware update) the list is not updated and need a refresh.

Once the list is ready it is loaded when the app drawer is itself loaded. More exactly it loads the list of apps (fast) and then it loads icons (slow). Data are then kept into memory until the app termination. It means that the first time the app drawer is loaded it may take some time, but subsequent loads should be almost instant.

Generally the more icons are in desktop, the more time it will take to load.

Pierre Hébert something is still confusing me.

Theoretically, as you said load the app drawer is the same as load a container(desktop) with all apps, but Tyler comment (and some others) says that this is false, and loads faster the desktop.

    Why?

Perhaps the bar from the app drawer takes long to load? Perhaps there is an undocumented bug somewhere?

TrianguloY My comment is based on analysis of an exported template which in each container’s folder had various (app) icons in original form plus a transformed (if any was applied).

Tyler Buckner I BTW tested your procedure, but items added later are not automatically sorted. Tried with or without “rearrange items” checked. Also I thought than “sort” from the items’ menu was just a one-time action. Or is there a sort-option somewhere I missed?

Lutz Linke to add an app to the panel that is new, you go into the all apps icon in the panel then say add to desktop from the new app. Then it gets added to the bottom of the list. So you hold down on the panel and click Items and select A to Z and that moves that new app to alphabetical spot in the grid in the panel.

Yeah its not automatic yet… Maybe scripts can help soon….

TrianguloY or maybe some external resource takes time to load, could it be a custom wallpaper ?
