So I have some down time here at work and although I don’t have access to any photo editing software I figured a good idea might be to take a look at some of the other home launcher’s logos.
Very few actually have houses and the ones that do are very similar to each other for the most part. I did only grab a few of the more popular ones but there are a ton out there honestly. Some of my personal favorites out of this bunch are the ones that don’t actually have a home. LLX is SOO much more then a home replacement so I think the logo should show that kind of mentality.
Those interested in something different might also just Google “winamp logo” and check some of those out. There are a bunch of variations on that logo out there that might help spark some ideas on a way to use a lightning bolt in new ways.
Although that’s not what I meant I can see why you and some others might want that. But, and it’s a big BUT, Lightning Launcher has found it’s niche and bloating it up I don’t think would be a step in the right direction for it. Also that would take major revisions and I’m sure a complete rewrite which Pierre has stated will not happen.
Instead of thinking of the name as a cliche think of it as being accurate. Lightning Launcher is very quick and takes up basically zero space especially for what it can do.
I hate to stray off my main topic which was helping to spark a creative environment. I do think though that Pierre is content with the current name and future of LLX.
Well I am sure a debate could be had but I can see both sides. I just know that some people have brought up animations and other stuff that are in some launchers that would really weigh LLX down. I’ll leave that for another post though if you want to talk more on that.
I would really like this post just to be focused on inspiration for designers looking to create a possible new logo for LLX
I think this is a clever idea. Although a house can be recognized by many as a symbol for some kind of launcher, it is also a big constraint. Getting rid of this kind of constraint is a great way to unleash innovation, and it also leaves more room to show other characteristics. In my view, this app is a launcher, but more than this, this is some kind of “toolbox to create a home screen” And that is something that is not shown by the current icon.
Yes, I really think that’s a good direction for LLX to go. In general I actually believe this about almost any icon. I was just making notes on my Evernote account and there icon is an elephant so it really is about the product more than it is the logo. BUT a logo must give you some kind of brand recognition and be unique compared to competitors.
