Suggestion on loading templates. You should be warned when you load as template that uses more than one desktop. I think it will be neat to load other people’s templates into extra desktops without them wiping out my main desktop. Even with it creating a backup I still had to go and reconfigure all my widgets.
Templates should already load as additional desktops and not replace existing one’s. Then if I really like it I can manually remove desktops I no longer need. Otherwise I do not see me ever “trying” someone’s template. To much work.

That works somewhat. If it is a widget that does not take configuration. For zooper widgets it requires picking the correct templates. For personal finance I have to select the stocks I want again, etc. If all new templates created new desktops this would not be needed. Even if it was an option when loading.

Unfortunately this is not possible for at least two reasons: firstly it could be possible to keep existing desktops and simply add new ones (though technically complex), but there will be conflicts if using multiple desktop navigation or shortcuts and so on. Secondly while loading a template, the list of widgets need to be cleared and Android does not allow to save them. As far as I know this is the same for other launchers… except Themer with Zooper, but you probably know why 😉
But basically I agree with you, it need to be improved, I am still looking for a solution to avoid the widget recreation problem, not for all cases, but for cases where it matters the most.
