Does anybody know of an easy way to make folders that don’t look terrible?
Does anybody know of an easy way to make folders that don’t look terrible? This is maybe the one reason I’m still on Nova.

I set nine-patches as backgrounds for folders. I could design and make them myself, but I’m lazy. I just went around and extracted some from the APKs of other apps.

I second Gábor Barta in this suggestion. Another source link for nine patches can be found in the help text for nine patches. In folder window settings, long tap on the “Background image option” (last item in the screen) and download drawable-xhdpi from there.

Hmmm… Ok, I’m gonna have to read up on this to figure out what you guys are talking about.
Would it be possible to extract the folder design(s) of Nova and use them in Lightning?

Extracting from other apps can be done right on the phone, even without root. The file names of nine-patches ends with .9.png, and can be found in the /res/drawable-something folders inside an APK. My favorite file explorer app is X-plore, it can open APKs of the installed apps directly as zip. You just need to copy the found images to a folder on the internal memory/sdcard

Generally speaking, best is to check whether you are allowed to do this first.

Anyway, graphics from the Android Open Source Project (link mentioned before) are really good, and free to use.

Nice 9patch editor.

Pierre Hébert If an app is open source, then most probably it’s allowed.
But otherwise if not, it’s not that you reverse-engineer the app itself, or try to understand its inner workings, or hack it. + I believe if you just extract for yourself, there won’t be any problem.

It all depends on the software license, even for open source projects, some are more restrictive than other.
Regarding LL, I am afraid you won’t find any good graphics in its package, lol !

< ![CDATA[
Apart from the overflow and rounded corners there’s nothing stopping you making Novas folders in LLX without 9patches.only thing is you cant remove the underline from the folder name, but still they should look just as good.
]]>
< ![CDATA[
Pierre Hébert so are you saying it’s okay to extract LL.
]]>
< ![CDATA[
I didn’t say that Jose Salvatico , but I can’t avoid it.

if you have the SDK of android in the folder
adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20131030\sdk\tools there is a batch file named: draw9patch if you open it there is a java application opening where you can drag youre image file to to create a nine patch ready file.
now there is also a online version for this.

You can compile it on the phone just install AIDE start a new project put your drawables in the res folder and compile the apk then just extract the 9patches.

sigh You guys are clearly experts… I wish it didn’t take an expert just to get folders to look half decent. Ah well… Guess I’m just going to have to find some time to study this stuff and eventually try it out.
This is seriously the one issue preventing me from switching from nova.

< ![CDATA[
I tried to make my nova folders tutorial simple.. I’m sorry it wasn’t more helpful
]]>
< ![CDATA[
No no, you guys are all super helpful. LL itself just requires more micromanagement than I’m used to, and even more than I expected. When I get around to it, I will start with your tutorial and ask questions from there.
]]>
< ![CDATA[
Yeah there’s definitely a learning curve.. Feel free to pm me if you have questions

Thanks, you guys are awesome.
