You can add images as the background of items (normal/selected/focused) and they will scale properly.
Just hide the icon and text and make its size proportional to the original image (or not)

you can create your own font with svg icons and then use the a letter as the icon (you can have multiple icons in the font)
then select your font for the label font, disable the icon,
to resize them, just change the font size
to change the color, change the font label color, and so on
the major drawback is that you can’t have multiple colors and shapes effects like the google icon
this is a font I created using Inkscape, FontForge and dp4FontViewer, and of course following tutorials.
one of the best things, it’s space saver, it’s about 13 kb in size
