Nine patch are not the easiest thing to use, but the result is great.

Jerome Rieke, 9-patch is basically a .png file that can be stretched in a definable manner, to fit whatever inside it… like text of varying lengths, or maybe varying numbers of icons, etc. Hope that helps, or maybe someone else can explain better.
