I’m finding it difficult to place widgets correctly on the screen. Example I want a widget to be the width of the screen, but just under the status bar. it’s either the very topmost row (over the status bar) or 1 row down. and employing a top margin of 100px is fine, but I lose the bottom 100px of the widget. Is there fine tuning of position between rows and columns, whilst retaining the rows and columns for icons?

Also, what do people do for unread notifications on icons, for gmail, whatsapp, textra, etc?

In edit mode, with widget selected, tap the icon at top right, second from top. You’ll see some options at the top of screen. Tap Detach from grid. Then you’ll be free to move by pixel instead of by row/column. Use the geometry editor for more precision. It’s the 5th icon from left on bottom that looks like a directional on a game pad. Tap center of geometry editor to change parameter. You may enter numerical values directly if you wish.

Also you can do unread texts by adding a “badge”. This uses dynamic text pre-formatted as a badge. Whatsapp and stuff is not supported internally so you’ll have to use Tasker or similar

Also, make sure content overlap is unchecked, that could cause the status bar problem.
