Please Pierre Hébert, it will nice have this new option for container settings… If is container desktop full, enable set, where will be new container desktop (top, bottom, left, right, random) created.
And this settings follow for sorting (az, etc).
For example, if user have panel 1×5 as dock bar, and set this new option for top, after sorting, they have full container desktop on place with home icon and more icons on top desktop from home icon…
BUT, in this new settings enable only way, if is enabled. I mean this… If user have settled only horizontal or only vertical scrolling, enable set only top and bottom or left and right sides.

Would it work if the desktop had the same box settings as items, with margins to configure the space between the screen borders and the desktop borders?

Pierre Hébert For example, i have desktop with grid 5×5 and set Scroll direction to Auto.
When i add 30 icons from app drawer, this create on home screen 25 icons, next screen is automatically on bottom and have 5 icons.
Right now i set Scroll direction to Horizontal only and must doing sorting (because i dont see 5 icons).
Now i see 25 icons on home screen and 5 icons is on right side (automatically).
And my idea is enabled in settigs, set where will be added (or sorted) icons, if number of icons are more then grid for one screen.
If scoll direction is:
Auto – enable set: top or bottom, or left, or right or auto (same as working now)
Horizontal only – enable set: left or right or auto
Vertical only – enable set top or bottom or auto
Both – enable set top or bottom, or left, or right or auto
No scrolling at all – i dont know what doing with this situatiao (if is more icons, others not visible)

Thanks I understand now. I recently fixed a bug dealing with new items position (you may have received a notification about it). It is not in 12.9b3 but will be there in the next update. It will fix some issues when the scrolling direction is either x or y but indeed ultimately auto and none would need a user setting.
