Here to. Android 4.1.2 Stock on Samsung S2.At the Moment with the latest LLX verry rare. Used to have it more often. Will try to report when it happens again.
This is a “out of memory” problem. You are probably near a threshold (because of widgets ?) and the color picker fails to allocate the bitmap needed to display the color selection box
Are you sure ? I only have two widgets, business calendar and a weather one, that I had on my htc desire years ago, with no problems, so surely an s5 can cope ?
I only have 2 desktops, and monitor running prices see s regularly. No other launchers other than lightning. Not rooted.
This might precisely be because this is a S5: with huge resolutions, nowadays devices needs an awful amount of memory to store images on the screen, and this grows with the square of the size. I often ask to have a look at widgets because statistics show that they are number one in terms of memory usage, but this is not always true. Generally speaking, everything linked with images need a lot of memory, especially on high res screens.

That seems to be a problem with the render.
Which android version (and device)? Custom Rom?

KitKat 4.4.2 on Galaxy S5. Stock rom.

Hmm, too common to be a device problem.
Does it shows the same when opening the color picker from another setting? (Such as item box)
This can sound silly, but better to check. Does it persist if you restart the device?

On 4.4.x i have the same problem. My phone is Galaxy S3 with custom ROM.

Yes, I have re-booted and it remains the same. I am not sure at what release it worked. I know it used to work fine.

The Problem is not Android 4.4.x, it is working for me on 4.4.4
Maybe it’s a Samsung specific Problem?

Lukas Morawietz: I guess so.
I remember a similar problem with another thing not being renderer in Samsungs 4.something (pierrox site is down now so I can’t check the change log)
I have a Samsung with 4.2.2, so it seems to be a Samsung 4.4 bug

Nigel Pugh as I asked, do it shows the same when opening the color picker from another setting? (Item, box, border/background)

I’ve frequently had this issue, and I’m on an M8.
