   This is most likely due to unread operator sms messages, such as voice mail or similar. Your sms app shows no unread, because those unread are not displayed.

   Are they filtered out by default? I’m using hangouts, Nexus 5 with android 5. Don’t see an option to filter/unfilter them

   I think the conversion had corrupted somehow if that’s possible. Showed as unread in different SMS app but when I marked it as read just stayed the same. Deleted the whole conversation and it seems to have done the trick
