Fourth 8.7 beta

Fourth 8.7 beta

Oh well, I thought the previous beta was the last one, but I made so many changes that I prefer to publish one more.

Don’t be afraid, I didn’t break everything – I hope 😉 But a particular bug required some important architecture changes, and also I added support for nine patch. This needs some experimentation before to be thrown into the wild.

Wondering what is a nine patch ? More infos here : http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/graphics/2d-graphics.html#nine-patch

More precisely those nine patches will allow this kind of effect:

– way better item selection effect (not a square anymore, but more complex shape/style is possible, such as button style items

– shadows

– rounded corner

– custom borders

In LL, nine patches can be configured in the box section. This applies to both items and folders window. Please read the doc first (long tap on the setting), I put a link to sample nine patches here.

Using nine patches is not, from far, the easiest to do. But this is so great that “_insane or not, it had to be done_” 😉

Ar 9patches great idea these bring back memory’s took me ages to figure out how to draw them, once you understand how they work though its pretty easy. For those new to these images I recommend drawing them with the draw9patch tool (Found in the android sdk) especially if you never drew them before. Using the tool you will be able to see how the graphic will look once its stretched, while its possible to draw them in Photoshop, gimp etc its a lot harder your basically blind.you just gotta draw test edit test edit test etc until you get it right.

    Jay M that’s right!

The tricky thing is that they need to be compiled to be used by LL. When building an app, the android tools do this for you automatically, but since LL doesn’t embed android build tools, the compilation step need to be done manually.

Aaaaand there’s a Bug. My widget randomly disappears but only one, rest is fine and I can’t open my apps on homescreen. I have to kill LLX and turn it on again to fix this.

Patryk Goworowski when you say you can’t open your apps, you mean that you tap on the icon but nothing happens ? It would be great if you could find a way to reproduce the problem.

Bug I think… Or user error… Just applied a 9 to a folder icon.  When I went to open the folder, it had automatically applied the 9-patch to the opened folder as well.  I had to go into the folder settings and reset to default.  The icon is sweet though.  This makes the best launcher ever even better!

Bryan Raymond “Just applied a 9 to a folder icon”, you mean the item box normal/selected/focused option and the image was used elsewhere too ?

I applied one 9 to the item box “normal”, didn’t like it so switched to another one. When I checked how the 2nd one looked, and then opened the folder the first green 9patch was there, stretched like a background in the folder. I can tell because the 1st was bright green and the second was black. And I have no other similar colors on my theme. See if I can recreate it, maybe was random glitch

Any one have any easy way to remove a 9 patch? Hitting default icon for a folder background doesn’t seem to work. I’ve also tried setting a solid color instead with no luck.
