I believe thay are the same thing. The desktop to me seems to refer to the current page. I could be wrong tho. some people might refer to the desktop as there over all layout including a few pages. But the customization screen clearly refers to the current desktop whitch is just one of up to 99 pages.
In the settings, “desktop” refers to one of the (theoretically) infinite surface whose layout you can edit. A desktop is divided into screen sized “pages”, which seem primarily important as a snapping / scrolling frame of reference. Various video tutorials and the like don’t seem to follow this convention though, so it’s kinda hard to say for sure.

Sorry for the confusion about wordings, Michael Plotke is right, desktop is the infinite surface while the page is a fragment of the desktop.
