Josh Gray why would it be less efficient, esp. if refresh on a panel/item can be manually controlled? my issue with widgets is they refresh and take up process time even when not in the foreground

Problems would be: retrieving RSS feed from URL (internet permission), parsing the XML and displaying it and not at last marking items as read.

Yes, this is a lot of work. It could be done and it may be more efficient, but the work/gain ratio is bad. This would be an app in the app, so in that case it is better to rely on another third party app.
