I had the same problem.
I have installed xUltimate compiler on my computer but the xUltimate tool is not working (i have errors at running it and i find no help to resolve it in documentation or google).
Do you know what is the best / easiest tool to compile 9.patch ?

Eric Le Bourvellec, xultimate is the easiest, and works great for me. What are the errors?
Otherwise you’ll have to build an apk, then take the .9.png files out of that.

Extract zip file of xUltimate inside my tools directory and then launch the exe from cmd terminal within same folder

Chris Chastain Hi Chris, you were nearly right. What was missing was a res folder in all folders of android-sdk\tools. That way the xUltimate does not crash and generates in done folder a 9.patch file for all png files found in other folders.
Now I can start trying to create my own 9.patch 🙂
