About the grid in edit mode: as of today it is displayed using crosses when a item on the grid is selected, and with little circles when a detached item is selected.
What about removing this crosses and dots ? Are they useful ? after all, if the launcher highlights the cell when moving an item (or display some shadow), isn’t that enough ?

In ancient times in edit mode the grid were drawn with white semi-transparent lines. I preferred that.
I think that is actually even less resource demanding to draw compared to crosses/circles: as you zoom out the number of lines to draw increases only linearly, whereas when drawing crosses the increment is quadratic.

That’s a good point Gábor Barta , however efficiency is difficult to predict because it actually depends on several factors, one of which is the number of updated pixels: it is much less with crosses and this mitigates the increased number of operations.

I find the grid immensely useful. Please keep it! Maybe have a toggle for those who don’t like it?

like Ren Shore i don’t want to miss !!

OK, understood ! Thank you for your fast feedback 🙂
I am not satisfied with the current mode when a detached item is selected. These little circles are not very nice, and personally I don’t like the switch when selection various items
What I will try then, is the following modification:
– display the grid with crosses, always (in edit mode).
– slowly fade out crosses as their number increase, until a threshold where there are not visible at all
– use different colors for the grid and the selection box when an item is on the grid or detached
Does it sound good ?

I have a different suggestion, some to think:
What about draw only the lines where the item are? More or less the same as expand the item borders to the whole screen.
In grid mode they will show the layout when moving around the screen. (I mean, from the shadow, not the one you are moving)
I free mode they will be just as another way to align (because they will also move when you are moving the item)
Hope this make sense and it maybe brings you ideas.

TrianguloY, do you mean like what nova does?

Ren Shore I tried nova, but I couldn’t find it.
What I’m saying is just to show two horizontal lines, and two vertical ones. They will be around the selected item.
When no item is selected, no lines (this case could be improved)

I thought you were saying something like a radial gradient ( http://puu.sh/6LV5w.png )

I see what you are meaning, I never noticed this myself before !
For LL I tend to think that displaying all crosses is useful because you can zoom out and see where you will move your item, but maybe not. I think the idea of TrianguloY is the same but with lines instead of crosses.

Ren Shore that’s another possibility, but not what I’m saying.

Really useful when lining up apps with each other when detached from the grid

Sometimes I just make a grid though
