Follow up (yes, again, I am slow…)

Some time ago Josh Gray  posted about the app icon and suggested a new one, then it has been discussed a few times the days after (https://plus.google.com/u/0/113418323387583377848/posts/2QmQqNLuzwn). As for myself, my preference goes to the one from Viggo Jorgen , the red one : https://plus.google.com/u/0/101399775307387148827/posts/ZfQDWFVK536.

I will always appreciate and be grateful for such initiatives and work.

Still, I am always cautious about modifying the main icon because it has far more implications that one would initially think 🙁 I would like to know the feeling of this community: what about refreshing the icon, which version do you prefer ?

Of all the ones posted, the ones you referenced above, by Viggo Jorgen are my favorites. I like the white one slightly more than the red, but both are great.

Although I do think it is time to possibly rethink the current logo I also think we should really put a lot of thought in to it and take the right amount of time. Out of what is submitted there I enjoy Viggo’s version but I would honestly like to see a few that are outside the current form.

Logo design is very difficult and can really help a products image. I have a couple ideas myself but almost no time with a new job and what not.

I would really like to challenge those who are looking to design one to think outside the box. Try making a logo without the house or any kind of shadow. Just something to kind of mix it up and force creative thinking.

I second Viggo Jorgen  ‘s red icon. LL could use a new, fresh icon, and that one covers it all. It’s a modern version of the original. It’s, as I say earlier, recognizable. And that is important.

Jacob Barton Well, first thing that we should consider is: do we want completly rebrand a product or just refresh? All propositions that were made were about refreshing, and personally I think that complete rebrand isn’t something LL is ready for.

Viggo Jorgen Oh I agree Viggo. I’m not sure a rebrand is something that LLX requires or would really benefit from. A refresh is in order though at least for the icon and most like the default theme.

It’s just upsetting for me to see some terrible Go Launcher skins get more attention then LLX itself. Anything to get LLX in to more people’s hands is something I think we should all strive for as a community.

Jacob Barton Yes, definitely LL needs more exposure. As for now I think that refresh of icon and some changes in LL UI (sad truth is it’s still more gingerbread than holo, not to mention… material) is all we need to go out to widier audience.

Josh Gray True, but majority of usres don’t know LL – so it’s new for them anyway. For those who knows LL it’s probably good enough in it’s current state. So complete rebrand isn’t necessary

Josh Gray I understand your point of view, but LL is already a great app. Refresh it and you have best product available. Complete rebrand is almost equal to starting from scratch. Just look how much time it taken to be where it is now. And what after next few years? Another rebrand? With constant rebranding LL will never reach status of big players in launchers market. Let’s stay with what we have, polish it and conquer all 🙂

In my opinion LLX should definitely keep its name and a red flash in the icon.

I agree a new icon would be great, and I don’t think it has to contain a house.

As long as I have to tap on the home-button to go to LLX, I think it’s wise to have a home in the icon.

As the shading (moonshine etc.), in my opinion, is a hype, we must not choose that. Because in that case we will be having this conversation again within a year.

Pierre HĂ©bert what are the implications behind the main icon that you mentioned?

I think that if you lay out some guide lines and points for the design ideas behind the icon, then it would be possible to hold a competition or a vote or something similar.

Although I have no idea at the moment what the latest Android L design guidelines are, but I think that the new icon should follow those and your guidelines as well, Pierre.

I think that the icon does need a refresh and that whatever icon comes, you should feel comfortable with it and believe it does the app justice!

A rebrand will not happen. This is more work that I can do, and above that I think it is not needed nor useful. The reason is LL is not for all users. Changing it’s appearance will not change how it works and I don’t expect LL to be able to reach much more users. The fact is that this is an app for advanced users only. I more or less gave up the idea to make it more accessible.

Regarding the implications behind the icon, I was not thinking at guidelines (because I am really not qualified for this…) but rather at what questions it would rise and the work it will need. Changing the icon need to take care at changing it everywhere (app, app store listing, web pages, these communities, wiki, etc.), and it need to be prepared to avoid too much confusion. In addition, I reused the current icon style to create other icons (based on the same background with similar white lines). Somehow those icons should be updated too. And another big question is (maybe the most important): what about icon author copyright?

Pierre HĂ©bert I don’t really care about copyright. IF my design will be in use, then just mention my name here and there, that’s all. It’s some kind of “thank you” for an amazing app.ï»ż

For me personally I would like a lightning more detailed.

But I’ll accept whatever decision will you make.

Perhaps you can wait until android L get released. You have time to think.
