Optia is an app that lets you share your screen with another optia user. The user can remotely control it and help you with things that are hard to explain. I thought it would be helpful for the tutorial section of the lightning launcher. Enjoy 😛

A few recent posts were dealing with increasing complexity and difficult handling of the app, especially for new users. There are even great suggestions on how to improve this. I sincerely thank you for this.

But right now I need to get some rest. Since I need a functioning brain, and black coffee is not a valid blood replacement, I prefer not to comment on this now but I will come back later 😉

WARNING: Long post on helping new users.

WARNING: Long post on helping new users.

So I’ve seen what seems like a big influx of new users in this community and we are almost at 1,100 already when 1,000 was reached not even that long ago. I believe Lightning Launcher is going to continue to grow at an increasing faster rate especially with the new script feature that is going to be put in.

With that in mind I’ve been trying to think of ways that will help keep new users as well as attract users that might overlook this launcher or use it once and remove it due to it being geared more towards the tech and customization crowd.

1. First and foremost I wholeheartedly believe that we all need to contribute to the wiki and get it functioning to a point where the most common questions can quickly and easily be answered. That will help with the steep learning curve that LL can bring to new users.

Wiki – http://www.pierrox.net/android/applications/lightning_launcher/wiki/doku.php?id=start

Once that wiki is working up to Pierre’s standards he could even easily put in some menus and a help section that could pull info from that page within the app itself. Helping to aide new users without them having to go out and find the wiki themselves.

2. I have been thinking for awhile that LL should never give up any features to become more accessible to new users. With this in mind I was thinking that with a few early prompts at the start of LL the user could decide what type of functions he/she wants active in the launcher. I was thinking just a basic and advanced setting but maybe three might be needed such as basic, experienced, and advanced. The user would get a brief description of what each would bring to the table and then choose.

· Basic would function much like that standard launcher and would get rid of things like stop points, panels, scripting, lockscreen, and possibly multiple desktops as this seems to confuse new users quite often. Each item would have prompts explaining how to edit or tweak the options.

· Experienced would have all options active minus scripting but would still have prompts for quick info and tutorials on items that most launchers don’t have. I will explain more later about the prompts.

· Advanced would have everything and explain nothing. For those who like to learn by doing and spending hours learning the program.

3. Now the prompts I was talking about in the first section would be full screen information panels that come up whenever a new item is added. The current prompts aren’t as helpful or annoying as they could be and people I think tend to skip right over them out of habit. They would be a few pages long(horizontally scrolled, or by pressing a next button), no more then 3 probably, and explain the item that is being added, how to edit them, etc. That way things like borders on panels would be explained when adding the panel and by making it full screen people can’t skip past it easily without actually reading it and with having a few pages it cant be dismissed as easily either. I was initially thinking the first theme should be a tutorial based theme but with prompts it makes more sense and would be easier and more effective but that doesn’t mean that a tutorial theme couldn’t be of great use to new users.

I had a couple more but they seemed to get rolled in to a few other ideas. I will post more if anything else comes to mind.

What about disable/enable the advanced features (we will need to discuss which ones) with a simple checkbox in all settings?

They will be only hidden, so they will still work in case someone load a template with them.

New users will only see the ‘basic’ features and that checkbox. Check it or not will be their decision, and maybe this will help to understand that LL is more than a launcher.

I have one big request: Pierre Hébert , please stop working on Scripting for a while and for a while focus on bug fixing.

Please, all,  read to the end.

You all know I’m a Lightning Launcher fanatic, using it for years now. And for sure I will never ever use any other launcher! But lately I’m sad getting more and more frustrated working on templates for  LLx. Really, the last weeks I trashed half a dozen or so templates I was working on. Simply because they did not work in practice as they should in theory — because of bugs and I finally gave up literally cursing and crying when I found no workarounds.

Just some simple examples:

Swipe gestures and panels

I have a panel with vertical scrolling. Swiping horizontally should scroll desktops. I does not. As workaround I even added swipe left/right gestures to the panel that scrolled to desktop shortcuts left and right. (Looked and felt terrible BTW).

Back button

Nothing much to say, reported that lately. Use shortcuts to jump from desktop to a position inside panel and your lost trying to return with “back” button.

To be honest: I did not even try any of the latest features added to LL(x). And reading the the postings the last weeks shows, new users still struggle with basic features. LLx is powerful, but it’s gettings overwhelming even for experienced users.

I don’t want to see LLx go down because it’s some day so powerful only long time hardcore users understand and newbies would need a 3 weeks training with certification to do basic stuff — leave alone handle the beast.

As much as I liked the idea of scripting, the more I think about it (I’m really sorry to say that): I don’t think it is the right way. How many users would (and could) use scripting finally? About 1%? … and how many of those would do something useful with it?

I currently have the feeling too much energy in LLx development i spent in the wrong direction. Especially when those little bugs keep crawling out and disturbing my every day life with LLx.

I’d like to comment on one of the greatest pieces of eye candy I have ever seen on any Launcher.

I’d like to comment on one of the greatest pieces of eye candy I have ever seen on any Launcher. I’ve returned to LLE after a 2 month hiatus and yesterday discovered a feature that is absolutely beautiful! Rotation of the Icons on the Launcher is just unbelievable. This is a feature that serves no importance other than looks but is one of my favorite features.. The smoothness of how the icons move is beautiful along with the fact I’m using Circle Zoom HD Icon Pack which is one of the most elegant icons you will ever find. Anyhow thanks to Pierre Hébert for this Launcher and all the features you continue to add. You are brilliant!

I look forward to publish my current setup as apk in play store.

I look forward to publish my current setup as apk in play store. I would like to package all my Zooper Widgets in the same apk and wish to make them available by default when user installs the template. I know it’s possible, Lutz Linke has done the same with his Hide and Seek template. Any pointers guys?

I’m back!

I’m back! Back in December I bought a new phone and due to the complexity of LLE I went with a simpler Launcher so I could spend time with my phone. It’s so glad to be back!
