In 9.1b1 (maybe others, too), when restoring a backup, widgets are not created. When restoring a “template” (exported for APK), everything is fine.

it places my widgets just fine when restoring a backup it just says that it can’t restore it which is strange…. i just click the widget to get it back….. my only issue with that is when i have the box checked to always allow the launcher to proceed it still brings up the box asking me to allow it. I’m new to the launcher so i might have missed something but I’ll get the hang of things.
This is because it is not possible to know which widget can be restored or not, and to be able to restore a widget it need to be deleted first. Hence the restore process prefer to assume that widgets have not been deleted in the meantime and as a consequence no restore is needed (and no prior deletion). This is different from the template process where widgets always need to be deleted before to start.
At least at the moment… because in order to keep existing desktops and merge those from a template, the situation becomes complex and as I would like to support this, I will have to find a way to dynamically detect if a given widget can be restored or not…
yeah it’ll place like a shape of what the widget was but there would be like a note over it saying the widget couldn’t be restored please click to replace it. ok i just click on it and then i get a box with a warning asking me to allow it. ok i click the box to allow it. my only issue is that it keeps asking me after i already said it could lol its no problem actually i don’t care about the box. as long as i can get my widgets back I’m good. the launcher has its own way of things but its fun learning new tricks.
it can get annoying when you have widgets galore and you have to see it for every single one of them . i have 4 widgets inside folders and its a pain but once my screen is the way i like it i won’t have to worry too much. that plugin helped with the wallpaper btw. next is live wallpapers in the future.
Indeed, and in theory backup/restore are not so frequent. The problem mainly arises when loading templates with a lot of widgets. It becomes boring and it may even look like the launcher is stuck in a loop 🙁
look like it but probably not. if it was one widget and you clicked the box only to go back to your home screen and find they you have to do it again and…… keeps repeating i would say its in a loop but no its just one per widget. its just everytime we do a restore. in any case the launcher is just fine its probably user error.
ok just for fun i restored a backup and i learned that the popup only shows up for new backup. meaning if you restore a backup you used to restore again that popup won’t show but if you restore a new backup it will…. and it only shows for widgets that were not previously stored on the backup only the ones that were.
i only counted the ones in folders that had nothing to do with my home screens lol luckily there’s only 1 home screen that I’ve used so far. i did add 2 more widgets since my last restore and I’m still working my home screen for that “what i like” feel. I’m open to ideas.
I had the same thing happen with the pop up. It kept saying click to always allow widgets, repeatedly, even when I said yes. At first I thought the app was broken & rein stalled. Then discovered that if I kept clicking “yes” to always allow widgets 14+ times it eventually completed installing the template, backup etc. It happens to me with templates and backups, including one of Lutz Linke’s that I got from the play store.
If that glitch isn’t immediately fixable, it would be helpful to change the wording in the pop up to get rid of the word “always.” it would be less confusing that way.

Interestingly I have no idea why this popup keeps re-appearing. And this is really annoying…

Thanks, Pierre Hébert for explaining.
I can confirm, pop-up shows up for each widget (about 10 in my template… plus 4 “ghosts”), checkbox has no influence (Nexus 4 with Android 4.4).
