I’m seeing an issue with the latest beta after some apps are updated.

Their desktop or folder icon is becoming detached from the actual app, so that when I tap the icon, I get the familar ‘App not found: Cancel, select a different app or search the Play Store’ dialogue.

The workaround to restore the binding is to remove the icon and add it again. Sometimes, an app drawer refresh is needed, too.

I had hoped to report this before the latest beta morphed into a new stable release, but it seems I have just missed that moment.

    Too bad, I just published it 🙁

    When a app is updated the app receives an event and in theory it should update links in shortcuts. Either the event isn’t received or it is not processed correctly.

    Usually it is hard to reproduce because reverting to a previous app version using the Play Store isn’t possible.

    If this happen once again, could you tell me what is the result of the following script please?

    alert(LL.getEvent().getItem().getIntent());

    Pierre HĂ©bert Yes, I’d be happy to help troubleshoot it.

    Where do you want me to run that script from?

    In the script editor check “item menu”, give it a name, then on any app or shortcut long tap, select “scripts” then the one you just created.

    Pierre HĂ©bert OK. I’ll do that the next time I see this problem.

    Not sure I FULLY understand the problem described, but I THINK, this is related.

    In the app drawer(s), I have noticed, shortcuts ‘multiply’, when apps are updated. Also, newly installed apps often do not appear.

    The update option in LL has resolved the issue, every time I’ve tried, so far, but it seems this step shouldn’t be necessary.

    Michael P. Jackson I see this problem, too, but this one is older than the recent beta series.

    Pierre HĂ©bert OK, the problem has just occurred again. I hooked up your one-line script to the icon of the app that LL claims isn’t installed, and this was the output:

    Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN cmp=com.supportware.Buienr adar/.activities.SplashActivity VirtualScreenParam=Params{mDisplayld=-1, null, mFlags=0x00000000)} }

    Again, the app is definitely installed. If I choose the ‘Go to Play Store’ option from the error menu, I can open the app from the Play Store.

    Well, the other day, I figured out EXACTLY what you were posting about. It’s been happening to me randomly.

    Some updates work with the existing shortcuts, and some require deleting and recreating the shortcuts. It’s not even app specific, as I’ve had a couple of apps update twice, and only one update to each of these apps caused a problem with the shortcut.

    Sorry for the late reply. Ian Macdonald could you run again the script with the updated app after the drawer has been refreshed please?

    On Android, launching an app doesn’t exist. Instead, an activity from the app’s package is started (an activity can roughly be seen as a screen). A package usually contains several activities. From time to time, app developers may change the app main screen (activity). In that case Lightning tries to update existing shortcuts so that they link to the new screen. This is a fuzzy operation because there is no hint in the app update process about the change.

    Anyway, I don’t think this is the issue here because changing the app’s main screen is rare enough to be invisible. A recurring issue is a probably a sign of failure somewhere.

    Michael P. Jackson Yes, the problem of LL getting out of sync with what’s installed seems to have got worse.

    Sometimes my app drawer will retain the icon of a deleted app, and when I recently searched the app drawer for a particular app, it appeared no fewer than 3 times. 2 of the icons led to dead-ends; only 1 worked.

    The app drawer has had sync problems since I started using LL, but in the beginning it was more common to have a newly installed app not show up in the app drawer at all. These broken links between apps and their icons seem to be a relatively new phenomenon.
