Mention was made recently of using a bug tracking service of some kind to avoid some of the many dire shortcomings inherent in the design of Google+. Frankly, it’s a terrible system, and if it wasn’t made by Google, it would wither and wilt away in obscurity, and deservedly so, but I digress.

Currently, Google+ is not only being used as a bug tracker, it’s also being used as a forum and a wiki. It is none of these things, and it fails miserably as a substitute for them. Honestly, for me, the worst thing about Lightning Launcher, is Google+.

Google+ is unstructured, slow, ugly, locked in, and borderline unsearchable. It barely functions as a social network, let alone in any other capacity. Let’s please, please, please talk about migrating to usable software or services.

I think you are against G+

Seems OK to me, I have no such problems..

Personally I wouldn’t mind replacing the g+ community(ies) with a single forum, a bug/feature tracker and the current wiki, which is in my opinion under used.

IMHO reasons mentioned by Michael Plotke are enough already, but a few others could be added easily.

There are two important things to note though:

    – the g+ community is a requirement for beta : google play serves beta versions to users in a g+ community only. This mean that discussions are inevitable on g+ even if a primary forum exists elsewhere, possibly leading to some dispersion, I think.

    – migrating is difficult (but every big move needs efforts)

Maybe leaving the current community untouched, and creating a new empty one only for the purpose of beta testing, and with only links to a forum, ticketing system and wiki could facilitate the migration.

    Pierre Hébert that’s not true…now

When you were offline the betas changed. Now there are three ways:

    – the old way, a Google plus community

    – a email-based list with a link

    – a link available to everybody that knows it

(And also now we can copy the link of any post from the android app, including from private communities! )

Bogdan Tautu Well, yes, but only because it’s terrible 😉

Adam Caine Even reading and replying to this comment was an annoying experience. Why must I click seven links to view all the content? Why are the comments stuck in a short scrolling box? Why is the whole thing in two columns? It’s all just bad UX upon bad UX.

Pierre Hébert Agreed. Migrating to a new space without touching the Google+ community seems optimal.

Here’s my offer. Any assistance I can provide in moving away from Google+ is yours for the asking. Including searching for solutions, implementing or managing those solutions, etc.

Looking forward to making it happen 🙂

I just like the fact that all my android stuff is here in one place and I rarely have trouble finding what I’m looking for, nor do I have any glaring bugs. When you look at apps like tapatalk or XDA app for example, for me, they are what you describe in your comment but hey, I’m no expert by any means.. 😄 looks like you just signed up to a whole lot of work Michael Plotke 😂

    I wish you well..

Thank you for your offer Michael Plotke.  I think it would be good to make a poll about this move first, then if results are in the direction of a forum rather than g+, the next thing would be to select an implementation for a forum and ticketing system.

My question is, will all of the folks that need help with more advanced things, will the G+ posts fall by the wayside?

I think using G+ is convenient for some people but for me and maybe some other people (rarely open the forum but want to keep on track every problems, solutions, and trick) G+ is not “neat”, something keep missing (hard to be tracked or to be found).

I did think of one upside the Google+ that would likely be missed. The notifications.

On other systems, the normal method of notification is email, which is very clunky compared to the way they’re handled by Google+.

Something to keep in mind if a switch occurs.

Olin James I’m not sure what you mean… Optimally, I’d like to import the more worthwhile posts to the wiki. In fact, I think I’ll do that 😉

    Abednego JS 100% agreed.

Well. I suppose if a different place were linked in the playstore it wouldn’t matter, but right now if people have questions on something it’s easy to find this community. If this community became defunct how easy will it be to find said site? I’m pretty inept in the pro side of LL features, if not for this community I may have given up trying to make it work for me.
