You can pinch zoom out to try and find them, maybe change the grid size to something higher than you have (like 10×10 to 20×20). If I can’t find it on the pinch zoom, I start over 🙁 It happened to me a lot inside panels, a few times on the desktop. What has helped me tremendously is detaching items from the grid and moving them with the “geometry” toggles. I really like that. Don’t think I have lost anything since I switched to detached.
If you have folders then you might want to look inside them. I remember things disappearing while I was trying to move them and then I found them inside the folders I went over or close to.

Double tapping zooms all the way out on the desktop. If its not there check in folders.

And also uncheck ‘honour pinned items’ in general settings, (if not, pinned items outside the main screen won’t be accessible)
