The compact feature could try to reorganize items by putting biggest items in a grid, then filling holes with smaller items, but from what I have experienced it leads to changing the order of all items, and people don’t like that at all.
In order to compact things (remove holes), the only way is to ensure that all items fit in a 1×1 cell. Keeping the original size will not allow the grid to be populated correctly.
Sort is even worst: since the order matter, there is no way to spatially sort objects with heterogeneous size.
An example of annoying thing is when you have to put a 2×1 item (or Nx1 where N>1) in the last column, it does not fit. Putting it on the next row will inevitably create a hole.
