I am in a big reflection phase these days.

I am in a big reflection phase these days. There are a number of things I would like to change in the app, and I badly need your feedback. For this reason I will start a few polls soon, I hope it won’t be too much a nuisance, I have created a new category “Express your opinion” to hold those posts.

Let’s start with the app drawer: I am considering changing the default scroll direction from vertical to horizontal. There is also the option to paginate it or let items scroll freely. What do you think about this?

I believe horizontal is the more universal one and those coming from almost any other standard launcher such as google, samsung, etc. will be use to the horizontal motion. Paged also seems to be a standard so that is what I voted.

I will also gladly vote and comment on anything you need help with. Glad to provide some feedback as I am sure others are.

I believe paginated and horizontal are “old-school”. Since most “popular” apps .. Google+, FB etc are vertical free-scrolling I believe it is good to maintain a common feel. Besides, your launcher has that lovely almost infinitely open map .. why put hurdles (pagination) that you have to jump over in the way

At first free vertical scrolling seemed so natural to me that I didn’t even implemented horizontal. Virtually all screens in all apps were scrolling vertically before tablets. But don’t know why, the default AOSP app drawer used a different scheme, and launchers forked from it followed the same route. The problem is now users have this horizontal scrolling in their habit and switch between the lightning app drawer modes instead of scrolling, hence a source of frustration.

I like the vertical one and really think it is more modern. The issue I see with vertical is that it can give an overwhelming feeling if too many apps. While horizontal give a morea paginated feeling (even when not paginated).

What I like best in vertical is what you have in most modern website. Vertical non paginated… To a certain extent, if you go more down 2 page long, you will get a short stop “load more” to improve both loading time and give some time to breath on long list. (Lilke google play search results)

Will you let the possibility to change from horizontal to vertical? If so horizontal paginate will be better for new user (because of the habit from other launcher) even if I prefer vertical free

Yes, this is just the default value upon install that could change

Pierre Hébert would it be possible jus to make it either way? Like Apex launcher has horizontal pagination, vertical scroll and pagination… Me personally if I’m gonna use vertical, I want it paginated because continuous scroll can be aggravating if you have a shit pile of apps… Another great thing would be the option to select drag and drop from the drawer to the home screen like a normal launcher.. I’m thinking open the menu in the drawer and have the option like “Quick Add” apps or call it something cooler lol jus would make it a helluva lol easier adding apps… Oh and a bulk add to folders… Yessssssssss lol😂😂😜😜

I’ll have a look at how apex does. Regarding bulk add, this is definitely on my top priority TODO list. I even thought at designing a whole new screen: a collapsing list with inner activities, a bit like Nova, but probably I will go for the current app drawer extended with batch add instead.

Pierre Hébert is speaking from the default settings. Like the most launchers doing it horizontally, it would be a good consideration. This way new customers are not so frustrated about the change. I use it vertical on my phone and tablet also.

i voted vertical paginated, for me personal.

but i think vertical free is better.

    why?

everyone know to scroll vertical on a webpage, g+,  hangouts, whatsapp  etc.

why should it be different in app drwaer?

gerd reuter I use it vertical with pagination. If I want to open an app, I already know which page, which row which column. I can open them really fast. If I would have infinite scrolling, I would have to take care of how much I scroll. This is only my opinion.

I love vertical. It seems the most natural movement for my used and abused thumb, (one handed), but when I’m using my 1st finger of the other hand to scroll through RSS feeds, emails, web pages, and my currently vertical app drawer, I still find it more natural to move up and down rather than left and right. I definitely like the free scroll option. Again, it feels very natural to me like a webpage etc. A quick suggestion for possible future integration, a click/tick mode. Where you could set a desktop, folder, or the app drawer to jump a certain number of grid spaces when scrolling. Essentially dividing pagination into smaller increments. I think it might be Nova, (I’m not sure I’ve tried so many at this point), that had a similar option on the dock pages. Anybody else thought about how cool that would make a panel? Just putting the idea out there.

Pierre Hébert , Corey Spell I’ve had that thought a few times, but it hasn’t really come up in conversation until now. On several of my setups, I use a panel 1 space tall and set it for horizontal scrolling kind of like the “top paid, top free, etc” menu in the play store. I’ll stick about 9 or 10 apps in it. I always dream of that option when I set those up. I feel like the decelerate animation would top it off perfectly! Haha!

thomas greer Corey SpellPierre Hébert the “top row category selector” sounds just like Nova App drawer (if I’ve understood you correctly), where you have App Groups across the top row (horizontal- tap the header or swipe page left/right to navigate) and the apps are shown in the area below (vertical- free scroll).

Actually if that’s what he’s talking about us it’s Nova I’m using it at the moment… I change launchers damn near every day lmao

Corey Spell so it definitely is Nova that has that feature on the dock?

thomas greer I have Nova (not Apex) and can guarantee that it has what I explained in my earlier post.

FYI: I’m using Nova Prime. The App drawer groups seems to be a feature of the Prime version only.

That’s an interesting situation: most votes come to two choices, which are exactly the opposite one: the most common one, and the least one.

Although free vertical scrolling is the more natural to me too because it works the same as nearly all other list based screens on the device, I will opt for the horizontal paginated option for the app drawer default,  because this  is expected by most users coming from other launchers and by the majority of voters here.

It would be awesome to select continuous or paginated for vertical and horizontal like apex does, but I agree on the horizontal paginated default

Talking about drawers: sort by icon color could look awesome. AppSwap does something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ebt.appswitch
