Now it’s time for a visual refresh of the app.

Now it’s time for a visual refresh of the app.

The topic has been discussed numerous times, and this evolution has been pending since a while: good news, these changes will take place in v10.7.

This will start with a new icon, but changing the icon cannot be an isolated change. It needs to be consistent with other components of the app, namely the default setup, the app style (menus, settings screens, various graphics inside the app) and also related artwork such as the banner that can be seen on the Play Store, which is most often displayed instead of the icon itself.

Several great icons have been designed by several members of this community. Of course we all have our own taste and it is hard to select a single icon among many other ones, but it’s time to choose, and here are my preferred ones:

https://plus.google.com/u/0/111836669294532396593/posts/brSQHYrJuDC – first one, with shadows (from Jacob Barton)

https://plus.google.com/u/0/101399775307387148827/posts/a6LEoLCkxa1 – black and white (from Viggo Jorgen)

https://plus.google.com/u/0/113687364661606395395/posts/4ETk1DETS5w – black and white, round (from Gerd Reuter based on the one from Viggo Jorgen)

Now based on this selection, I asked myself why I liked these icons and what was the goal:

– I like the contrasted colors dark/white as found in Viggo’s icon and variation from Gerd.

– I like Jacob’s icon for its sharp angles and simple shapes. In the end, I prefer this abstracted design over a more classic house icon.

In my opinion the icon must be clear, contrasted, sharp and easy to grasp. I don’t necessarily want the icon to represent the app: if it can convey a feeling through an abstract drawing then it’s fine too, and maybe better. I would like the icon and the app to share some colors, if possible.

The icon from Jacob is my preferred of the three, but colors were not my preferred ones. So what I tried was to use the shape from Jacob’s icon, and adopt a more contrasted color set such as Viggo and Gerd ones. I selected dark grey and white for the background, to get the most contrasted colors (and also because I plan to reuse them for menus, screens and icons inside the app – white theme) but kept the red flash for it’s “punch”, and because a monochrome image doesn’t really catch the eye. Finally I kept some shadows… because I like that.

The result is the icon in the album above. What about this one? Do you like it?

Lightning Launcher eXtreme V10.6.4 is out!

Originally shared by Lightning Launcher

Lightning Launcher eXtreme V10.6.4 is out!

It fixes several bugs introduced in 10.6, most notably several issues with the desktop size after a screen rotation.

Some of these issues are device and android version dependent and hard to catch and fix. I hope that everything is ok now, but if the problem persists do not hesitate to ping me again!

V10.6.4

V10.6.4

At last, not a beta anymore, some issues were hard to fix. To recap, it contains the following bug fixes when compared to 10.6:

– bug fix for incorrect desktop size after a screen rotation event

– fix menu key behavior with edit mode and target container

– stop point fixes.

Some issues are still pending, but I will address them in the next update.

V10.6.3 beta

V10.6.3 beta

Today I am publishing an incremental bug fix update in the beta channel. It deals with these weird desktop sizes, either bigger than the screen, or not taking correctly system bars position into account. Hopefully this will be all good now, but need to be tested in the wild as this is device dependent.

Also in this update a bug fix regarding the menu key behavior with the target container. Not a big bug, but an annoying one for devices with a menu key, I am sorry about that!

V10.6.1 beta

V10.6.1 beta

Just a minor update to fix stop points. I have good hopes that this version will work well but since this is a sensitive feature I prefer to publish it in the beta channel first, then I will move it to production channel if all goes well.

Lightning Launcher eXtreme v10.6 is online!

Lightning Launcher eXtreme v10.6 is online! This is the first major release since a while and I am very happy to publish it. Things are moving forward.

Most notable new features are support for custom status and navigation bar color (full support for Android 5+, tinted on Android 4.4), an experimental “seamless mode” allowing an infinite scrolling and at last but not least a new setting to automatically colorize any icon. As usual, a fair number of bug fixes are also included 😉

To celebrate both this new release and Christmas, Lightning is 50% off for a limited time, spread the word!

Important bug fixes in this new beta:

– Fix a crash (symptom: unresponsive app, need to force close)

– Fix status bar not hidden on Android 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2

– Fix system bars overlap options not always correctly set after upgrade

And also:

Allow negative values in box settings: nice to remove padding from widgets 🙂
